One morning he gets up, goes to work, and kills his employer, America's former counter-terrorist chief Maximilian Ophuls, in view of the victim's illegitimate daughter, India. But fate has played him cruelly, torn him away from his beloved home and brought him to Los Angeles, where he works as a chauffeur. His skill as a tightrope walker was legendary in his native home of Kashmir. 6/29/2023 0 Comments An offer and a gentlemanI understand that these are the historical facts of this period but I wouldn't have chosen it as light, romantic listening. This book gives a pretty ugly picture of the way the lower classes, such as servants, were treated during the Regency period as well as how dependent women were on others. Was An Offer from a Gentleman worth the listening time? I enjoyed the description of the masquerade ball. The An Offer from a Gentleman Community Note includes chapter-by-chapter summary and analysis, character list, theme list, historical context, author biography and quizzes written by community members like you. I didn't really enjoy listening to him and sometimes found the book a grind to continue on with. He's genuinely not that admirable throughout the book and behaves in some pretty disgusting and self centred ways much of the time, taking advantage of the heroine in a number of ways. The hero is quite abusive and manipulative at times. For a supposed romance, it's not very romantic. The main problem I had with this book is that the so called hero behaves in an extremely ugly fashion on many occasions. What could Julia Quinn have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you? Definitely another book narrated by Rosalyn Landor. won an Academy Award for his brilliant portrayal of. Loner Zack Mayo (Richard Gere) enters Officer Candidate School to become a Navy pilot and in thirteen tortuous weeks he learns the importance of discipline, love and friendship. Would you try another book written by Julia Quinn or narrated by Rosalyn Landor? Such a movie is An Officer And A Gentleman, a timeless tale of romance, friendship and growth. Great performance but uncomfortable story 6/29/2023 0 Comments The rising brian keene seriesThe Lost Level series is the most fun I have had reading a print novel since Joe Lansdale’s Drive In series, and I can’t wait to see which roads Keene takes us down next. While I love the novel as a whole, the little side peeks into some of the alternate realities was the highlight for me, as well as the cool little short story attached to the end. Yet must importantly, it’s pure joy to read. The Lost Level series is the perfect blend of modern science fiction concepts, classic pulpiness and Keene’s own special mythology. Return to the Lost Levels offers a quest, some “new” characters, death defying (and not-quite-defying) action and just enough interdimensial weirdness to through me into full on squee mode. In the second book in the series, Brian Keene cranks up the pulpy goodness to 11. 6/29/2023 0 Comments Moscow 2042 by Vladimir VoinovichThe ideology has changed somewhat, into a hodgepodge of Marxism–Leninism and Russian Orthodoxy (the Genialissimus is also Patriarch). After Vladimir Lenin's dream of the world revolution narrowed down to Joseph Stalin's theory of " Socialism in one country", Genialissimus has decided to start from building "Communism in one city", namely in Moscow.ĬPGB – The Communist party of state security (a combined Emblem of the USSR and the KGB) After the "Great August Revolution", the new leader referred to as "Genialissimus" has changed the Soviet Union. The Russian author Kartsev, living in Munich in 1982 (just like Voinovich himself), time travels to the Moscow of 2042. An extreme slavophile Sim Karnavalov (apparently a parody of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn) enters Moscow on a white horse as the savior. The party is led by former KGB general Bukashin (name literally meaning "the insect") who met previously with the main character of the novel in Germany. It soon becomes clear that the political system in the country is not a utopia and that Russia is ruled by the "Communist Party of State Security" which combines the KGB, the Communist Party, and the Russian Orthodox Church. In this book, the alter ego of the author travels to the future, where he sees how communism has been successfully built in the single city of Moscow. Moscow 2042 ( Russian: Москва́ 2042, Moskva 2042) is a 1986 satirical novel (translated into English from Russian in 1987) by Vladimir Voinovich. The four Garcia daughters, whom we meet as adults but then re-encounter as children as the narrative flows backward in time, are accustomed to a prestigious perch in Spanish Caribbean society. Central to both are young, first generation American females in rebellion against their immigrant elders, and in both books the stories pile up with layers of multiple points of view and overlapping experiences, building to a sense of family myths in the making. Many parallels may be drawn between these stories and Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club. Alvarez, whose first fiction this is, has an ear for the dialogue of non-natives, and the strong flavors of Dominican syntax and cultural values permeate these pages. The chronicle of a family in exile that is forced to find a new identity in a new land, these 15 short tales, grouped into three sections, form a rich, novel-like mosaic. 6/29/2023 0 Comments Book american kingpinYou can read this before American Kingpin: The Epic Hunt for the Criminal Mastermind Behind the Silk Road PDF EPUB full Download at the bottom. I popped in a couple of weeks ago and picked-up a book for my grandma related to WW1 and Castle Donington. This volume also reproduces Frederick Douglass's only work of fiction, The Heroic Slave, published in 1853. This new edition examines Douglass's biography, literary strategies and political activism alongside his depiction of Black women's lives and his narrative histories of Black heroism. Douglass's My Bondage and My Freedom is a literary, intellectual and philosophical tour-de-force in which he betrays his determination not only to speak but to write 'just the word that seemed to me the word to be written by me.' Recognizing that his body and soul were bought and sold by white slaveholders in the US South, he soon realized his story was being traded by white northern antislavery campaigners. An instant bestseller, Douglass's autobiography tells the story of his early life as lived in 'bondage' and of his later life as lived in a 'freedom' that was in name only. By Frederick Douglass Published by Oxford World Classics NEW paperbackĪppearing in 1855, My Bondage and My Freedom is the second autobiography written by Frederick Douglass (1818-95), a man who was born into slavery in Maryland and who went on to become the most famous antislavery author, orator, philosopher, essaysist, historian, intellectual, statesman and freedom-fighter in US history. 6/28/2023 0 Comments Made you up zappiaHe turned down my street and pulled into my driveway. I shouldn’t say things like that to him, but they hung neatly in the air and cleared out the tension. “No, no, don’t do that! The smile was better.” The words felt wrong coming out of my mouth. A real, teeth-showing, nose-scrunching, eyes-crinkling smile. My first idea was to drive up and down in front of you a few times to prove I had a car and you didn’t.” His tone was light and he was smiling. “Since when have you been good? Are you feeling guilty or something?” “What do you mean?” Honest confusion crossed his face. “But I’d like to know why you’re offering.” “No, not against it.” I realized with a strange sort of happy dread that we were falling back into the easy conversation we’d had at the bonfire. The line from the notebook felt like a dead weight in my stomach. Unless you’re that against having anything to do with me. “And you seem to have forgotten that I have a truck,” said Miles. “You seem to have forgotten that someone cut my bike in half.” I faced forward, trying to look inconspicuous. Groaning, I stuffed the notebook back under his chemistry book. For further information or to contact us (for example if you think this URL was disabled in error) please visit our website at. However there are a lot of problems with this book, and the whole series in general. There is a lot of action and the plot moves at a fairly decent clip. I do enjoy that Riordan is exploring the more obscure mythology of Gaea and the Titans. Gaea can’t be allowed to awaken or it will mean the end of the Earth as we know it. Everything needs to be fixed before the Feast of Spes, when Gaea plans to sacrifice two demi-Gods and fully awaken. The other need to go east in the Argo II. One group of our heroes needs to get the Athena Parthenos to Camp Halfblood. The narrator does a pretty good job of making all the characters sound different. There are a ton of different voices to narrate for, so it is a challenging book to narrate. I listened to this on audiobook and the narrator does a decent job. While I have enjoyed it, I haven\’t liked it as much as the Percy Jackson books. I know a lot of people are steadfast fans of this series. This was the final book in the Heroes of Olympus series. |
